What's Bridge Together Project?

Naomi Suzuki launched her project which is called “ Bridge Together Project [Nihon he Iko let’s go to Japan project]” which has been formally approved as a Beyond 2020 project. [※“Beyond 2020” is run by The Prime Minister’s Cabinet’s Headquarters for the Promotion of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games”]
Bridge Together Project aims to introduce the beauty of Japanese culture and attract people from all over the world to Japan. Having overseas visitors helps support people who suffered from the earthquakes in Tohoku and Kumamoto prefecture. This is a cultural program for creating a better Olympic legacy for 2020.

This project has also registered as “UK- JAPAN Season of Culture” Announced in August 2017 by Prime Ministers May and Abe.

①,Sakubei Yamamoto Coal Mining Paintings World Tour

The Bridge Together Project is bringing the beautiful and historical coal mining paintings of Sakubei Yamamoto which has been registered as a “UNESCO Memory of the World”. "The Diary of Anne Frank" and "Beethoven's Symphony No. 9" are well known as items of UNESCO Memory of the world and Sakubei Yamamoto's coal mining scene artworks are the first Japanese pieces to be registered as such.
Sakubei Yamamoto's coal mining scenes depict miners at work and annotate their struggles in the early 20th Century in images that would be familiar to coal mining communities across the UK. The paintings highlight the similar history of coal mining in the UK and Japan. The exhibition will share this commonality and aims to build friendships and create another ‘bridge' between the UK and Japan.
As a part of the Beyond 2020 programme, The Bridge Together Project aims to introduce the beauty of Japanese culture to a global audience and entice visitors to Japan. We are setting out to create a long-term, lasting legacy for the 2019 Rugby World Cup and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympic Games.

We will hold events in the UK and New York, followed by
cities from around the world in the lead up to the games in 2020.
